Kinetic Spray Systems

Kinetically Sprayed Steel Shafts There are many significant advantages of this process over conventional thermal spray processes. These include:

  • Delivery of solid state materials to substrate without degradation.
  • Near Zero Porosity (<1%), giving extremely low permeability.
  • Near Zero Oxides (<1%), providing exceptional corrosion resistance.
  • Ability to form free standing, near net shaped structures.
  • Apply oxide sensitive materials without shrouding or vacuum.
  • Maintain near wrought material electrical and thermal conductivity.
  • High Hardness from refined microstructure caused by impact similar to peening/cold working.
  • Low temperature allows spraying of pure metals, alloys, cermets, ceramics and plastics.
  • High bond strength.

KSS is an advanced low temperature coating system that produces a coating unique in its combination of extremely low oxide level, high density and its low residual stress state (compressive), allowing for significant thickness to be applied at high bond strengths. Other qualities include high thermal and electrical conductivity and many coatings that are as machinable as the substrate they are applied to. This technology is new so the full benefit of its exceptional ability to spray well bonded, solid state materials is only now being fully explored.
