The Atmospheric Plasma Spray (APS) coating process passes inert gas or gases through an electric arc formed between the cylindrical copper anode and the centrally aligned tungsten-tipped cathode. This disassociates the molecules and ionizes the atoms, thereby forming a plasma jet. The plasma jet allows the use of materials with extremely high melting points, making them ideal for the application of MCrAlY's and ceramics such as chromium, zirconium and aluminium oxides. Plasma spray is particularly attractive for applications requiring thermal barrier coatings and ceramics.

Typical applications:

  • Gas path components on land based turbines
  • Pump shafts, housings and casings
  • Rolls for pulp and paper
  • Special pistons
  • Plungers
  • Molten metal protection
